During Ramesses II reign, Egypt’s worst enemy were the Hittites because Ramesses II took the King Mursili’s cousin to Egypt as a prisoner. They wanted to retrieve him, so King Mursili ordered his soldiers to flee Egypt and retrieve, him but that plan failed. So the king and the royal family demanded that Ramesses II return their family member. Ramesses II denied this request and he denied any of Mursili’s people to be in his country. This created a huge conflict and the two empires grew very close to war. Ramesses II decided on an agreement with the now new Hittite king Hattusili III to end the conflict. This became the eariliest known peace treaty in history. It was written in two versions of different lanuages. One was in heiroglyphs and the other was in cuneiform script. They are both displayed in a museum today. Ramesses II did so many campaigns and peace offerings with other countries to keep Egypt as safe as possible. This is one of the main reasons he was a very respected and legendary paharaoh.
